Key takeaways

  • In AV-Comparatives' 2025 Consumer Summary Report, seven products earned Top-Rated status, including Bitdefender, Norton, ESET, Avast and AVG.
  • Microsoft Defender Antivirus is built into Windows 11 at no extra cost, so many home users already have a decent baseline before buying anything.
  • First-year prices are usually discounted. Avast Premium Security, for example, shows $49.08 for the first year against a $77.99 renewal price on its own site.
  • Kaspersky is no longer sold to US consumers after the 2024 Commerce Department ban, so we left it off this list even though it still scores well in lab tests.
  • Bitdefender Antivirus Plus is the cheapest paid pick here at $29.99 for the first year on up to 3 devices.

The best anti virus software

There is no single "best anti virus software" for everyone, but there is a short list of tools that test well and are still sold in the US. Here are the eight we would actually shortlist in 2026, with the catch for each one.

If you want our short answer to "which anti virus software is best", Bitdefender is it for most people. It earned AV-Comparatives' Top-Rated Product award for 2025, plus Silver in Real-World Protection and Bronze for both Malware Protection and low false positives. That is a consistent record across the tests that matter.

Pricing on Bitdefender's own US page starts with Antivirus Plus at $29.99 for the first year, covering up to 3 devices. Total Security costs $59.99 for one person on 5 devices, and the family version covers 5 members and 25 devices for $79.99. All of those are first-year prices, and Bitdefender says renewal pricing applies after that.

The catch is the upsell ladder. Premium Security, Ultimate Security and Ultimate Security Plus add VPN and identity features, and the top family plan reaches $179.99 for the first year. Most households only need Antivirus Plus or Total Security.

Why it made the list
  • Top-Rated in AV-Comparatives' 2025 summary
  • Low entry price for 3 devices
  • Family plans cover up to 25 devices
Keep in mind
  • First-year prices rise at renewal
  • The bigger bundles get expensive

Norton

Norton is the name many people already know, and the lab results back it up. AV-Comparatives gave Norton Antivirus Plus Top-Rated status for 2025, Gold in Real-World Protection and Silver for performance, which means it caught threats without slowing PCs down much.

Norton's US product page lists AntiVirus Plus at $59.99 for the first year for 1 PC, Mac, tablet or phone, with 2 GB of cloud backup and a password manager. Norton 360 Deluxe is listed at $119.99 for the first year and covers 5 devices with a VPN and dark web monitoring. Norton runs frequent sales, so check the live price at checkout.

The honest weakness is cost and noise. Norton pushes its LifeLock identity plans hard, and the $189.99 Select Plus bundle is more than most families need. If you only want malware protection, AntiVirus Plus is enough.

Why it made the list
  • Gold award for Real-World Protection in AV-Comparatives' 2025 report
  • 360 plans bundle VPN, password manager and cloud backup
  • 60-day money-back guarantee
Keep in mind
  • List prices are high next to Bitdefender
  • Plenty of upsells to LifeLock identity plans

Microsoft Defender Antivirus

Great for: Windows users who want free, built-in protection

Microsoft Defender Antivirus website

Before you pay for anything, know that Windows 11 already comes with antivirus. Microsoft says Defender Antivirus is real-time, always-on protection and that you do not have to pay extra for it. It sits inside the Windows Security app alongside SmartScreen warnings for risky sites and downloads, and Smart App Control, which tries to predict which apps are safe to run.

For a careful user who keeps Windows updated and avoids sketchy downloads, Defender is a reasonable baseline. It was part of AV-Comparatives' 2025 test field of 19 products.

What you give up is breadth. Defender does not protect your Mac or your kids' phones, and it did not make the 2025 Top-Rated list. If you want parental controls, a VPN or protection on several kinds of devices, a paid suite still makes sense.

Why it made the list
  • Included with Windows 11 at no extra cost
  • Always-on real-time protection
  • Works with SmartScreen, Smart App Control and Windows Firewall
Keep in mind
  • Windows only
  • Did not earn a Top-Rated award in AV-Comparatives' 2025 report

ESET HOME Security

ESET HOME Security website
eset.com homepage

ESET is a favorite of people who want security software that stays out of the way. ESET HOME Security Essential earned AV-Comparatives' Top-Rated Product award for 2025, alongside Bitdefender and Norton.

The US site splits ESET into three annual plans. Essential covers antivirus, safe payments, anti-phishing and Wi-Fi protection. Premium adds unlimited VPN traffic and file encryption, and Ultimate adds identity protection and a router VPN. ESET offers a free 30-day trial with no credit card required, which is a fair way to see whether it suits an older laptop.

The annoyance is that the US plan pages do not show prices until you start checkout, so you have to click through to compare. Resellers often list ESET keys cheaper, but buying from ESET directly keeps renewals simple.

Why it made the list
  • Top-Rated in AV-Comparatives' 2025 report
  • 30-day trial with no credit card
  • Plans scale from 1 to 10 devices
Keep in mind
  • Prices only appear at checkout
  • VPN and identity tools are reserved for higher tiers

Malwarebytes

Malwarebytes built its reputation as the tool you run when something already went wrong. The free version is still a popular second-opinion scanner, and the paid Standard plan adds full-time protection, safe browsing and a scam and ad blocker.

Its pricing page lists Standard from $59.99 a year for 3 devices and Plus, which adds a VPN, from $79.99 a year. A Family Standard plan covers 10 devices for $119.99 a year. Malwarebytes works on PC, Mac, Android and iOS, and it offers a 60-day money-back guarantee.

The honest catch: Malwarebytes Premium was in AV-Comparatives' 2025 test group but did not earn Top-Rated status. We would use it as a cleanup tool or a second layer rather than as the only protection on a family PC.

Why it made the list
  • Free version for scanning and cleanup
  • Standard plan covers 3 devices
  • 60-day money-back guarantee
Keep in mind
  • Not among AV-Comparatives' 2025 Top-Rated products
  • Paid plans cost more than Bitdefender's entry plan
Avast logo

Avast

Great for: Best free antivirus app

Open avast.com

Free tierYes
Avast website
avast.com homepage

Avast Free Antivirus was one of AV-Comparatives' Top-Rated products for 2025, and it took Gold in the performance category, which is impressive for a free tool. Its sister product AVG AntiVirus Free earned the same awards.

If you want more, Avast Premium Security shows $49.08 for the first year against a $77.99 renewal price for one Windows PC plus one phone. Avast offers a 30-day free trial on Windows with no credit card needed.

There is a real trust issue to weigh. In 2024 the FTC finalized an order banning Avast from selling web browsing data for advertising and requiring a $16.5 million payment, after charges that its Jumpshot subsidiary sold browsing data collected through its software. The order adds privacy obligations going forward, but some readers will reasonably choose a different brand.

Why it made the list
  • Free antivirus inside the Avast One app
  • Top-Rated and Gold for performance in AV-Comparatives' 2025 report
  • 30-day Premium trial without a credit card on Windows
Keep in mind
  • Paid to settle FTC charges over selling browsing data
  • The free app nudges you toward paid upgrades

Trend Micro Maximum Security website

Trend Micro is worth a look for households with a mix of devices, Chromebooks included. Maximum Security covers up to 5 devices on Windows, Mac, Android, iOS and Chromebook, according to Trend Micro's product page.

The standout feature is Pay Guard, which Trend Micro says checks that banking sites are legitimate before you sign in. The page also lists ransomware defense and web threat blocking. Trend Micro's US store shows $74.95 for the first year on 5 devices, down from $104.95.

On the downside, Trend Micro Internet Security was in AV-Comparatives' 2025 test field but did not earn Top-Rated status. You also pay more up front than with Bitdefender or Avast.

Why it made the list
  • Covers 5 devices across Windows, Mac, Android, iOS and Chromebook
  • Pay Guard for safer banking
  • Ransomware protection
Keep in mind
  • Higher starting price than rivals
  • Not among AV-Comparatives' 2025 Top-Rated products

Avira suits people who want a free antivirus that also covers a Mac and phone. Avira Free Security is described on its site as a free, all-in-one solution, and the antivirus runs on PC, Mac, Android and iOS. A Software Updater for PC is also part of the lineup.

In AV-Comparatives' 2025 report, Avira Free Antivirus earned Bronze in Real-World Protection, sharing that spot with Kaspersky and McAfee. That is solid for a free product, though it did not make the overall Top-Rated list.

The trade-off is the usual one for free tools. Avira steers you toward Avira Prime for its VPN and premium apps, and you need to go through the store to see current pricing. Avira also notes that Windows versions older than 10 are no longer supported.

Why it made the list
  • Free Security suite with antivirus and extra tools
  • Apps for PC, Mac, Android and iOS
  • Bronze for Real-World Protection in AV-Comparatives' 2025 report
Keep in mind
  • Paid Prime prices are not listed upfront
  • The free version pushes upgrades

How we picked these

We started from AV-Comparatives' 2025 Consumer Summary Report, which tested 19 Windows security products across real-world protection, malware detection, performance and false alarms. We then checked each vendor's own US website in October 2026 for current plans, device limits, first-year prices, renewal notes and free trials. Where a vendor did not show a price we could verify, we wrote See website instead of guessing.

We did not install these products in a lab ourselves. We left out Kaspersky, which still scores well in lab tests, because the US Commerce Department banned its sale to US consumers in 2024. We also skipped tools we could not verify on the vendor's own site.

How to choose antivirus software that fits you

Start with what you already have

If you only use one Windows 11 PC, Microsoft Defender may be enough, especially if you add good habits like updating Windows and using a password manager. Paid suites earn their price when you have several devices, kids online, or a Mac and phones to cover too.

Count devices before you compare prices

A $29.99 plan for 3 devices and a $59.99 plan for 1 device are very different deals. Write down every PC, Mac, phone and tablet in the house, then compare plans that cover that number.

Read the renewal price

Almost every antivirus company discounts the first year and renews at a higher rate automatically. Avast, for example, shows a $77.99 renewal price next to its $49.08 first-year offer. Set a calendar reminder a month before renewal so you can cancel or shop around.

Skip extras you will not use

VPNs, identity monitoring and cloud backup add cost fast. If you already pay for a password manager or VPN, buy the plain antivirus tier instead of a bundle.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best anti virus software for a PC?

For most Windows PCs, Bitdefender is our top pick because it earned AV-Comparatives' Top-Rated award for 2025 and starts at $29.99 for the first year. Norton and ESET are also Top-Rated options. If you do not want to pay, Microsoft Defender is built into Windows 11.

Is free antivirus good enough?

For many careful home users, yes. Avast Free Antivirus and AVG AntiVirus Free were both Top-Rated in AV-Comparatives' 2025 report, and Defender comes with Windows 11. Paid plans mainly add extras such as VPNs, parental controls and coverage for more devices.

Which anti virus software is best for Mac and phones?

Look for a plan that covers several device types. Bitdefender, Norton, Malwarebytes, Trend Micro and Avira all list Mac, Android and iOS apps. Microsoft Defender Antivirus, as built into Windows, only protects that PC.

Is Kaspersky still available in the US?

No. In 2024 the US Commerce Department banned Kaspersky from selling its antivirus software to US consumers, and the company said it would wind down US operations. Existing installs were reported to lose access to updates, so US users should switch to another product.

Do I need antivirus if I have Windows Defender?

Not always. Defender gives you free real-time protection on Windows 11. A paid tool is worth it if you want stronger lab results, protection for Macs and phones, or extras such as parental controls.

What does "best av software" mean in lab tests?

Independent labs like AV-Comparatives rate products on how many real threats they block, how much they slow a PC, and how many safe files they flag by mistake. A good product does well on all three, not just detection.
