Best AI Image Generation Tools in 2026: 9 Tools Compared

Best AI Image Generation Tools in 2026: 9 Tools Compared

Key takeaways

  • Most of the best AI image generation tools now have a free way in: ChatGPT, Gemini, Adobe Firefly, Ideogram, Leonardo, Krea, Canva and Bing Image Creator all list a free tier, and only Midjourney does not.
  • Free limits are small and change often. Ideogram lists 30 free credits a week, Leonardo 150 tokens a day, Krea 100 compute units a day and Canva 20 AI uses a month.
  • Paid plans for individuals mostly cluster between $5 and $30 a month: Krea starts at $5, Adobe Firefly at $9.99, Midjourney at $10, Leonardo at $12 and Ideogram at $20.
  • Free plans can come with strings. Ideogram says everything made on its free plan is public, and its free credits only go to accounts that sign in with Google, Apple or Microsoft.
  • If you only need a few pictures a week, start with the assistant you already use (ChatGPT or Gemini) before paying for a dedicated art tool.

The best AI image generation tools

These nine tools cover the main ways people make AI pictures: inside a chat assistant, inside a design app, or in a dedicated image studio. Prices come from each vendor's own pages where we could open them, and we flag where we could not.

1. ChatGPT

  • Best for: Making images while you chat
  • Starting price: Free / See website
  • Free plan: Yes
  • Website: chatgpt.com

ChatGPT is the easiest place to start if you already use it for writing or questions. You describe the picture, look at the result, then ask for changes in plain language, such as a different background. There is no prompt syntax to learn.

OpenAI's pricing page lists limited image creation on the Free plan, more on the Go and Plus plans, and unlimited and faster image creation on Pro. A Free tier help article says image generation has its own usage limit, separate from the chat limit, and that the limit resets over time. We could not find an official number for either tier, and community forums show the limits have moved more than once, so expect to hit a cap if you generate a lot.

The catch is that you are buying a general assistant, not an art studio, so you get fewer art controls than Midjourney or Leonardo offer. Our check of OpenAI's own pricing page was blocked, so we list the price as See website.

Pros

  • Create and refine images in the same conversation
  • free tier includes limited image creation
  • no separate art app to learn

Cons

  • Image limits are not published as exact numbers
  • paid pricing could not be confirmed from the page we could open

2. Gemini

  • Best for: Free image creation and editing inside Google's assistant
  • Starting price: Free / See website
  • Free plan: Yes
  • Website: gemini.google

Google's Gemini app includes image generation and editing on its free plan, according to Google's plans page. The page ties Nano Banana, Google's image model name, to higher usage on its paid AI Plus, AI Pro and AI Ultra plans. It also says Nano Banana Pro has limited access through Google Flow on the free plan.

Google describes limits in general terms: usage depends on prompt complexity, the features you use and chat length, and limits refresh every 5 hours until a weekly limit is reached. That is hard to plan around if you need a set number of images.

Gemini suits people who want to edit a photo with a short instruction or skip opening another account. The page we loaded showed prices in Bangladeshi taka, not dollars, so we list See website for US pricing.

Pros

  • Image generation and editing are listed on the free plan
  • paid plans raise usage allowances
  • fits into the Google account you already have

Cons

  • Google does not publish exact image counts on its plans page
  • US dollar prices were not shown on the page we opened

3. Adobe Firefly

  • Best for: Designers who already use Adobe apps
  • Starting price: $9.99 per month
  • Free plan: Yes
  • Website: adobe.com

Firefly is Adobe's image generator, and it makes the most sense if you already work in Photoshop, Illustrator or Express. Adobe's plans page lists Firefly Standard at $9.99 a month with 2,000 monthly generative credits, Pro at $19.99 with 4,000, Pro Plus at $49.99 with 10,000 and Premium at $199.99 with 50,000. Team plans are priced per license.

According to Adobe, paid plans include unlimited standard image features such as Generative Fill, while credits are spent on premium features, video, audio and partner models. Credits reset each billing cycle and do not roll over, so unused ones disappear.

Adobe also offers a free plan with daily generations across image, video and audio and no subscription, though the page does not say how many. Firefly's public pricing is one of the easiest to read in this list.

Pros

  • Clear public pricing and credit counts
  • paid plans include unlimited standard image features such as Generative Fill
  • a free plan with daily generations

Cons

  • Premium features, video, audio and partner models use credits that reset monthly and do not roll over
  • the free plan's daily count is not stated on the page

4. Midjourney

  • Best for: Highly stylized art
  • Starting price: $10 per month
  • Free plan: No
  • Website: midjourney.com

Midjourney is the name most people mention first for striking, painterly images. Its official documentation lists four plans with monthly Fast GPU time of 3.3 hours on Basic, 15 hours on Standard, 30 hours on Pro and 60 hours on Mega. Relax mode, which is slower but unlimited for images, is not available on Basic and is included on the other three.

Midjourney's free-trial page says no free trial is currently available on Discord or the midjourney.com website, with a limited trial on its niji journey app. Its pricing pages and plan comparison blocked our automated check, so the monthly prices of $10, $30, $60 and $120 come from several consistent third-party summaries. Extra fast hours cost $4 an hour, according to the documentation. Confirm the figures at checkout.

It is not the quickest tool to learn. Prompts and parameters take practice, and you pay before you know whether you like the results.

Pros

  • Popular with artists for its distinctive look
  • Standard plan and above include unlimited Relax mode
  • four plan tiers to scale up

Cons

  • No free trial on the website or Discord at the moment
  • Basic plan has only about 3.3 hours of fast generation a month

5. Ideogram

  • Best for: Posters and graphics with text
  • Starting price: Free / $20 per month
  • Free plan: Yes
  • Website: ideogram.ai

Ideogram is the pick for anyone making posters, social graphics or logos concepts where words need to appear in the picture. It has built a reputation around text rendering, though results still vary by prompt.

Its help center lists a Free plan with 30 credits a week, Plus at $20 a month (or $15 a month billed yearly) with 2,400 credits a month, and Pro at $60 a month (or $42 yearly) with 7,500 credits. A Team plan costs $30 per user a month and needs at least two users. An older Basic plan at $8 a month is no longer sold, though existing subscribers keep it.

Two free-plan details matter. Everything generated on the free plan is public, so do not use it for client work you want to keep private. And the 30 weekly credits only go to accounts created through Google, Apple or Microsoft sign-in. Accounts made with an email and password get none.

Pros

  • Published plans with credit counts
  • known for putting readable text in images
  • paid yearly billing lowers the monthly rate

Cons

  • Free images are public
  • free credits go only to accounts that sign in with Google, Apple or Microsoft

6. Leonardo

  • Best for: Game assets and concept art
  • Starting price: $12 per month
  • Free plan: Yes
  • Website: leonardo.ai

Leonardo.Ai is a browser-based image studio that game artists and hobbyists often use for characters, props and concept scenes. Its help center says free users get a daily allowance of 150 tokens that resets every 24 hours, with no carryover.

Paid plans, according to Leonardo's pricing page as summarized in search results, are Essential at $12 a month with 8,500 fast tokens, Premium at $30 with 25,000 and Ultimate at $60 with 60,000. Leonardo says annual billing lowers the monthly price to roughly $10, $24 and $48. We could not open the pricing page itself, so confirm the numbers and the plan names when you sign up.

Token pricing means the cost per image depends on the model and size you pick, so a plan can last a week or a month. Top-up packs exist but need an active paid subscription. Read Leonardo's terms for the rights that come with each plan.

Pros

  • Free plan refreshes daily
  • paid tokens can roll over
  • several price steps from $12 to $60

Cons

  • Plan names are inconsistent across third-party guides
  • token use varies by model and size

7. Krea

  • Best for: Cheap entry and many models in one place
  • Starting price: $5 per month
  • Free plan: Yes
  • Website: krea.ai

Krea gives you access to many image, video and 3D models under one account. Its pricing page lists a Free plan with 100 compute units a day, Basic at $5 a month with 5,000 units, Pro at $21 with 20,000 and Max at $63 with 60,000. It also advertises 40% off yearly billing.

The free plan is generous for a trial. It includes all image, video and 3D models, a commercial license, LoRA training limited to 50 images, upscaling up to 2K and one job at a time. Once units run out, the page says you can keep going with unlimited relaxed generations on supported in-house image models.

One warning: the page's structured data lists different paid prices (Basic $9, Pro $35, Max $70). We report the visible prices, so check the checkout screen before paying. Krea suits people who like trying several models.

Pros

  • Lowest listed entry price here at $5
  • free plan includes a commercial license per its pricing page
  • free daily compute refresh

Cons

  • Prices listed in the page's structured data differ from the visible ones
  • free plan limits upscaling to 2K and runs one job at a time

8. Canva

  • Best for: Quick images inside a design
  • Starting price: Free / $144 per year
  • Free plan: Yes
  • Website: canva.com

Canva is not an art studio. It is a design app that now includes AI image tools, and that is exactly why people use it. You make a picture, then place it into a flyer or social post without exporting or switching apps.

Canva's pricing page lists Free at US$0, Pro at US$144 a year for one person, Business at US$250 a year per person and Enterprise through sales. On the Free plan it lists up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses, shared across all of Canva's AI tools and reset each month. Free users do not get Ultra AI tools.

The page we opened did not name the image feature, so check which tool does what in the editor. People who only want standalone art will get more control from a dedicated generator.

Pros

  • Generate an image and drop it straight into a poster, post or slide
  • free plan available
  • wide template library

Cons

  • Free plan has only 20 AI uses a month, shared across all AI tools
  • Ultra AI tools are not available on Free

9. Bing Image Creator

  • Best for: Zero-cost casual images
  • Starting price: Free
  • Free plan: Yes
  • Website: bing.com

Bing Image Creator is Microsoft's free tool. A Microsoft page describes it as free for everyone with a Microsoft account, usable worldwide except Russia and China, and unavailable to work or school accounts. The same page says you get 15 free fast creations a day, after which creation switches to standard speed. You can spend Microsoft Rewards points to keep getting fast creations.

The page we loaded in Bengali listed a model selector with a Microsoft model named MAI-Image-2.5-Flash and said you can earn free credits to reach more advanced models. A support thread suggests the daily fast number has shifted before, so treat 15 as the stated figure, not a guarantee.

Try this first if you just want a card image or a blog thumbnail and no subscription. It has fewer controls than the paid studios, and for commercial work you should read Microsoft's terms.

Pros

  • Free for anyone with a personal Microsoft account
  • fast creations are limited but standard-speed ones continue
  • Microsoft Rewards points can buy more fast creations

Cons

  • Not available to work or school Entra ID accounts
  • daily numbers have changed over time

How we picked these

We compared each tool using its official pricing pages, help center articles and plan documentation in October 2026. We did not run our own long-term tests, so our notes reflect what the vendors publish. Where a vendor's page blocked our check, or sources conflicted, we said so and used See website instead of guessing.

We looked for a free or low-cost way to start, plans that are explained in plain numbers, and a clear sense of who each tool is for. We mixed the large assistants (ChatGPT, Gemini), a design platform (Canva, Adobe Firefly) and dedicated image studios (Midjourney, Ideogram, Leonardo, Krea, Bing Image Creator).

How to choose an AI image generator

The right tool depends more on what you do with the images than on which one is "best".

Match the tool to the job

For social posts and flyers, Canva or Ideogram sit close to the finished design. For concept art, Midjourney and Leonardo give you more control. For a one-off picture, the free tiers of ChatGPT, Gemini and Bing are enough.

Read the free plan rules

Free credits are not equal. Check whether your images are public (Ideogram), whether credits refresh daily, weekly or monthly, and whether a commercial license is included. Krea states one on its free plan.

Watch the credit system

Adobe credits reset monthly, Leonardo tokens can roll over on paid plans, and Midjourney sells GPU hours. Estimate how many images you really make in a month before choosing a tier, and read each vendor's terms before using images in ads or products.
